O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performances. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. This shocked the judges, and they recommended that the public decide for Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially declared by the Premier Paul Martin immediately.
